Are you new to camping? Do you enjoy exploring the great outdoors but not the ‘roughing it’ part? Do you want to learn how to camp in style and comfort? Then continue reading!
Buying a new or second-hand Camper Trailer can be quite daunting, as there are so many options out there and it is a large investment. So you want to be sure you’re purchasing the right one for you! We’ve put together a little guide to help you take the guesswork out of getting your next Camper Trailer!
Set Your Budget
Before deciding on what camper trailer suits you, it’s best to decide on a budget. You can snag up a camper for a few thousand dollars, or you can splash out and get a top of the range luxury camper – find a price bracket that suits you! From here you will be able to compare different brands and camper types and find one that fits your budget.
Types of Camper Trailers
Soft Floor campers generally fold out and have an appearance and feel similar to a large cabin tent. They are lighter than a Hard Floor, have more internal storage and they commonly have more living space. The only downside about Soft Floor campers is that they normally take longer to set up, keeping them clean takes a little more effort and they come with less in-house amenities.
Hard Floor campers operate similarly to pop up caravans, where the roof is raised and rear/side sections expand to create sufficient living space. They are quick and simple to set up, have a better structural set up (which is great for weather resistance) and feature more internal amenities. However, Hard Floor campers are heavier to tow and generally have less storage.
These beauties are still relatively new to the market and offer and in between with the flexibility of a camper trailer while still maintaining the solid structure and additional amenities found within a typical caravan. Hybrids are usually in the higher price bracket and weigh more than both the Soft and Hard Floor campers.
Before strapping on your camper to the back of your vehicle, you must be sure to check your vehicles tow capacity (this may impact your decision on which camper to buy). If you have trouble finding this information or are just unsure, don’t hesitate to contact the manufacturer of your vehicle – it’s better to be safe than sorry!
Interior & Exterior Checks
It’s always a good idea to check the inside and out of a camper trailer that you are looking into buying (even if it is a brand new camper!) to make sure it’s the right one for you. Here are a few questions to ask yourself when browsing and comparing camper trailers.
Is the living space big enough for you and your group? Is there enough capacity for everyone to sleep comfortably? Is there any power sockets and what voltage do they support? Is there enough storage? Are there sufficient amenities (such as a sink, bathroom, shower) for you to camp comfortably?
How easy is it to set up and pack down? Do you like the appearance? Are you confident in the brand? Is there a manufacturers warranty? Is the material waterproof? Is the stitching on the canvas sound?
Questions To Ask The Salesman
It is important to ask questions to help with your decision making, as it will help you decide if you are making the right purchase for you! Here are some questions you might like to ask:
How long does the warranty last?
What does the warranty cover?
Is there any other after sale support available?
Why should I buy this particular camper trailer?
Are there any known problems with this model?
Is there a better price that could be done?
Are there any extras that can be added?
